I think it's interesting that, as far as I know, we haven't heard anything from President Obama or his cabinet on this issue. A few weeks ago the Attorney General and the Secretary of Education traveled to Chicago to speak out about incidents of youth violence there, and yet in this case, which is the most egregious example of youth violence I've ever heard, is not acknowledged.

Excellent write up. By the way, I am the "D" in the quote above. Surprised to see it but appreciate the fact that you understood where I was coming from.

I am not sure I qualify as a "feminist" per se, but I am definitely on the attack and getting all the info out that I can about this nonsense. Prior to this incident I'd written several articles on male behavior towards women and female sexuality and men's attempts to dominate it which are on my blog (survivingdating), and did one internet radio show on the issue of gang rape right after the Richmond incident. I have a formal discussion with experts on rape, misogony and victim recovery scheduled for 11/4/09.

You are invited to listen in and comment if you have something to add to the discussion (info linked above). I would really welcome and appreciate your input.

That's true, most people agree this is categorically awful, and its a stretch to blame the victim, though try as folks might. I'd like to see men's groups stepping up, getting on CNN, going to the community, hosting dialogues and conversations in their own communities, getting out in public and discussing this incident as a Men's Issue. Delving deeper into the issues and creating solutions, as modeled by men who are tired of being represented by this behavior, is what this conversation really needs.

I think one of the reasons this isn't getting a lot of repeat articles in feminist blogs is there's not much to say, beyond the fact that it's absolutely terrible. There's been little backlash against the feminist narrative in this case, so post after post responding to continued attempts to reframe this as "the victim's fault" just aren't necessary.

Another aspect is that an incredibly violent and prolonged rape like this can be extremely triggering for some victims or survivors. I think a lot of women are just taking time to process their feelings.
